Fisheries in India is an integral economic activity and a flourishing sector with varied resources and potentials India ranks second in the world in total fish production, annually about 9.06 million metric tonnes, out of which 1.69 lakh tonnes was produced in Telangana itself!

The Government of India launched National Fisheries Development Board in 2006 with its headquaters in Hyderabad. In Telangana there are 19.04 lakh fishermen. Above 65 percent of fishermen hails from Warangal, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda and Karimnagar districts.

In Contemporary times, Telangana explores the scope of improvements in the following realms

  • Need to imporve the productivity of water bodies through stocking of fish seed
  • Need to improve the existing fish seed farms and establish new fish seed farms in both government and private sectors
  • Need to introduce new techonologies viz. Inland culture, Pen and Cage culture
  • Need to concentrate on modernization of fish markets and establish newer markets
  • Need to encourage mobile fish markets and escalate capacity building of fisheries in a bigger way
  • In a bid to increase Aqua Farming, the Telangana Goverrment is designing to introduce inland aquaculture
